SC stays 27% quota for OBCs in IITs, IIMs

Thursday, March 29, 2007

An incendiary law to expand caste-based college admissions quotas, which had set off months of protest last year, was temporarily suspended today by the country’s highest court.

The Supreme Court order applies to a law, passed last December by the Indian Parliament, to set aside an additional 27 percent of seats in publicly funded universities for a group that sits somewhere along the middle of the caste ladder, known in the odd language of the Indian bureaucracy as "other backward classes" or O.B.C.’s.

Should this be called as victory of student power? Or is it victory of truth? Whatever you call it as, its a great news for lakhs of students studying across the country.

In the past when the topic was hot, I could not participate much in the campaigns. But I had posted few entries about the topic. Here are links to the same.

Purnateja's views about the event are very much similar to thoughts in anyone's mind.

The Supreme Court has stayed the OBC quota! The government wanted quotas for OBCs based on the 1931 census data!! Finally some rational and sense seems to have prevailed over illogical nonsense. And now the government wants to collect data backing its decision for quotas! It is like sentencing somebody to death and then trying to manufacture the reasons for which he was sentenced to death. The Supreme Court in its judgment has clearly stated that the government's intention to implement OBC quota was for divisive vote bank politics and not the welfare of the people. It is indeed unfortunate that the government has successfully misled several millions of people that this move was for the 'upliftment' of 'poor and backward' people. Thankfully their bluff was called by the judiciary.
In fact it is not just the government but all political parties as a whole that this judgment indicts. They are the people whose minds need to be 'uplifted' and these are the minds that are truly 'backward'.
I think the Supreme Court needs no proof that the people who are mentally backward and in dear need of reservations are the politicians. So, now the Supreme Courts should transfer this quota from OBCs to politicians. This should solve a lot of problems. Let us hope and pray that at least an education at the IITs and IIMs changes these people and India moves 'Ahead' instead of falling over 'Backwards'. Only then it will be time to celebrate..
