A tribute to nice guys

Saturday, June 28, 2008

I got this as a forwarded mail. And I found it worth sharing with all the "nice guys" around reading my blog. Its a bit too long but worth spending few minutes.

This is a tribute to the nice guys. The nice guys that finish last, that never become more than friends, that endure hours of whining and bitching about what assholes guys are, while disproving the very point. This is dedicated to those guys who always provide a shoulder to lean on but restrain themselves to tentative hugs, those guys who hold open doors and give reassuring pats on the back and sit patiently outside the changing room at department stores. This is in honor of the guys that obligingly reiterate how cute/beautiful/smart/funny/sexy their female friends are at the appropriate moment, because they know most girls need that litany of support. This is in honor of the guys with open minds, with laid-back attitudes, with honest concern. This is in honor of the guys who respect a girl's every facet, from her privacy to her theology to her clothing style.

This is for the guys who escort their drunk, bewildered female friends back from parties and never take advantage once they're at her door, for the guys who accompany girls to bars as buffers against the rest of the creepy male population, for the guys who know a girl is fishing for compliments but give them out anyway, for the guys who always play by the rules in a game where the rules favor cheaters, for the guys who are accredited as boyfriend material but somehow don't end up being boyfriends, for all the nice guys who are overlooked, underestimated, and unappreciated, for all the nice guys who are manipulated, misled, and unjustly abandoned, this is for you.

This is for that time she left 40 urgent messages on your cell phone, and when you called her back, she spent three hours painstakingly dissecting two sentences her boyfriend said to her over dinner. And even though you thought her boyfriend was a chump and a jerk, you assured her that it was all ok and she shouldn't worry about it. This is for that time she interrupted the best killing spree you'd ever orchestrated in GTA3 to rant about a rumor that romantically linked her and the guy she thinks is the most repulsive person in the world. And even though you thought it was immature and you had nothing against the guy, you paused the game for two hours and helped her concoct a counter-rumor to spread around the floor. This is also for that time she didn't have a date, so after numerous vows that there was nothing "serious" between the two of you, she dragged you to a party where you knew nobody, the beer was awful, and she flirted shamelessly with you, justifying each fit of reckless teasing by announcing to everyone: "oh, but we're just friends!" And even though you were invited purely as a symbolic warm body for her ego, you went anyways. Because you're nice like that.

The nice guys don't often get credit where credit is due. And perhaps more disturbing, the nice guys don't seem to get laid as often as they should. And I wish I could logically explain this trend, but I can't. From what I have observed on campus and what I have learned from talking to friends at other schools and in the workplace, the only conclusion I can form is that many girls are just illogical, manipulative bitches. Many of them claim they just want to date a nice guy, but when presented with such a specimen, they say irrational, confusing things such as "oh, he's too nice to date" or "he would be a good boyfriend but he's not for me" or "he already puts up with so much from me, I couldn't possibly ask him out!" or the most frustrating of all: "no, it would ruin our friendship." Yet, they continue to lament the lack of datable men in the world, and they expect their too-nice-to-date male friends to sympathize and apologize for the men that are jerks. Sorry, guys, girls like that are beyond my ability to fathom. I can't figure out why the connection breaks down between what they say (I want a nice guy!) and what they do (I'm going to sleep with this complete ass now!). But one thing I can do, is say that the nice-guy-finishes-last phenomenon doesn't last forever. There are definitely many girls who grow out of that train of thought and realize they should be dating the nice guys, not taking them for granted. The tricky part is finding those girls, and even trickier, finding the ones that are single.

So, until those girls are found, I propose a toast to all the nice guys. You know who you are, and I know you're sick of hearing yourself described as ubiquitously nice. But the truth of the matter is, the world needs your patience in the department store, your holding open of doors, your party escorting services, your propensity to be a sucker for a pretty smile. For all the crazy, inane, absurd things you tolerate, for all the situations where you are the faceless, nameless hero, my accolades, my acknowledgement, and my gratitude go out to you. You do have credibility in this society, and your well deserved vindication is coming.

First day of summer

Google is celebrating fist day of summer with this logo. I don't know how much sense it makes to display this logo at Indian domain cause this is not the first day of summer for India or for that matter all Asian countries. I think they should put this logo only for US and Canada and around countries.

The dream that was....

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Dream is one of the weirdest thing in this world. And here I'm talking about the dreams which we see with closed eyes in sleep. Of course other dreams are also kinda weird at times but I prefer to talk about them later on.
So coming back to the point, dreams is one of the most weird things in this world. So last night, I had one such weird dream.

I was waiting at Vadala Road station for a train towards Vashi for my summer internship. For a change, I decided to get into ladies compartment. For the obvious reason. Checking out some hot chicks (?). And as i boarded the train, to my surprise I could only see guys all around the compartment. And everyone was staring at me as if they were hoping a butterfly and a crow came along. They stared at me for few seconds and then everyone turned around with disappointment.
The fact ws that everyone had boarded the compartment in the hope of checking out chicks and there was no chick in there.

I just wonder if the dream was inspired by the scene in Euro Trip where the guys go to the nude beach to check out chicks and they find all "i-want-to-see-nude-female" kinda males around..

IITB students launch Indian digg

More commonly, the site wurlpool.com launched by Vivek and Rakesh can be called as Indian version of Diggit. But having a close view and after talks with Vivek, I'm sure this site is gonna be lot more than just basic content aggregater. Anyway, I won't break the suspense about the site.
You can just visit the site and register yourself for the invite of the launch ceremony.

My best friend's wedding: which I broke down

Monday, June 16, 2008

The story is about one of my best friend, whose name I would like to keep secret as of now. By the end of the post, you may realize who he is. And if you don't, then anyways I wanted to keep it secret. So its fine.
So this friend of mine who owns a software company in Pune also owns an I-phone. And one fine evening, I was playing with his I-phone and I dialed my number. Those days, I used to have a English caller tune. So when I called my number, I also pressed the star key. And my tune was copied to his number.
I thought the story would end here but it did not. Few days later, his family was looking for a bride and there was one bride's family who liked this guy. They liked the guy, his family, his business everything. Until.. Alas.. One fine day, the girl's ad decided to call this to be groom and as he dialed the number, one zaggy English song was making waves in his ears. Now, I won't really mind if a guy my daughter is gonna marry has an English caller tune but this man did. And he said, "I can't let my daughter marry a guy who has English caller tune".
And the prospect engagement and marriage was broken. Am still wondering what went wrong? Pressing the star button or the psychology of the girl's parents to consider a English song lover is not an ideal son in law..
And btw, that friend of mine is still trying to figure out which English song his callers are listening to.. :-)

The IT obsession

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Two IT guys were chatting in a pub after work. "Guess what, mate," says

the first IT guy, "yesterday, I met this gorgeous blonde girl in a bar."
"What did you do?" says the other IT guy.
"Well, I invited her over to my place, we had a couple of drinks, we got into the mood and then she suddenly asked me to make her feel special"
"You're kidding me!" says the second IT guy.
"Then I lifted her and put her on my desk next to my new laptop."

"Really? You got a new laptop? What configuration?"
"It's a 1 GB RAM and mobile Internet connectivity card and 180GB HARDDISK, Wi-Fi, DVD-Writer......................"

Tatas, Infosys among world's 15 most reputed firm

Saturday, June 07, 2008

ndia's Tata Group has been ranked the world's sixth most reputed company and Infosys Technologies 14th in the annual 'Global 200: The World's Best Corporate Reputations' list compiled by the Reputation Institute here.

The list that includes 10 other Indian companies is topped by Japanese automaker Toyota, followed by Google and Ikea, Sweden's home products' chain.

"India's Tata Group and Infosys Technologies saw their reputations increase by over 8 points in 2008, and catapulted over 100 spots in the ranking to join the top tier of global companies in 2008 in recognition of their growing role among the world's business elite," the Reputation Institute said in its survey report released Thursday.

Other Indian firms in the top 200 list include Maruti Udyog (ranked 77th), State Bank of India (107), Hindustan Lever (131), Hero Honda Motors (147), Life Insurance Corporation of India (161), Bajaj Auto (169), ONGC (186), Mahindra and Mahindra (191), and Indian Oil Corporation (199).

Some large Indian firms which were among 600 shortlisted companies but could not make it to the final 200 included Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, the country's biggest by revenue among private sector firms and overall largest in terms of market value.

India's biggest private sector lender ICICI Bank, Airtel, BSNL, Wipro, ITC and Air India also could not make the cut.

According to the Reputation Institute, the Tata Group and Air India have the strongest and weakest corporate reputations, respectively, among Indian companies. The Tatas are ranked higher than companies like Walt Disney, Marks and Spencers, Xerox, Colgate-Palmolive, Sony, Honda and General Electric (GE), all of which are in the top 50.

Reputation Institute said that all the 200 companies earned scores higher than the global mean of 64.2 points, but despite earnings better-than-global average, the companies ranked 51-200 have "significantly weaker reputations than the top tier companies."

Each company's overall Global Pulse score is based on what the institute terms the seven dimensions of reputation: products and services, innovation, workplace, citizenship, governance, leadership and performance. The most influential dimensions are products and services, and citizenship.

Reputation Institute, a private, New York City-based research and consulting firm, launched its list of world's most reputed companies in 2006.

Happy Birthday Diego Velázquez

Friday, June 06, 2008

Google launched another new logo to celebrate 409th Birth aniversary of Diego Velázquez, a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary baroque period, important as a portrait artist. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656).

From the first quarter of the nineteenth century, Velázquez's artwork was a model for the realist and impressionist painters, in particular Édouard Manet. Since that time, more modern artists, including Spain's Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, as well as the Anglo-Irish painter Francis Bacon, have paid tribute to Velázquez by recreating several of his most famous works.

Different angle

Tuesday, June 03, 2008

A teacher teaching Maths to seven-year-old Arnav asked him, "If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?"

Within a few seconds Arnav replied confidently, "Four!"

The dismayed teacher was expecting an effortless correct answer (three). She was disappointed. "Maybe the child did not listen properly," she thought. She repeated, "Arnav, listen carefully. If I give you one apple and one apple and one apple, how many apples will you have?"

Arnav had seen the disappointment on his teacher's face. He calculated again on his fingers. But within him he was also searching for the answer that will make the teacher happy. His search for the answer was not for the correct one, but the one that will make his teacher happy. This time hesitatingly he replied, "Four". The disappointment stayed on the teacher's face. She remembered that Arnav liked strawberries. She thought maybe he doesn't like apples and that is making him loose
focus. This time with an exaggerated excitement and twinkling in her eyes she asked, "If I give you one strawberry and one strawberry and one strawberry, then how
many you will have?"

Seeing the teacher happy, young Arnav calculated on his fingers again. There was no pressure on him, but a little on the teacher. She wanted her new approach to succeed. With a hesitating smile young Arnav enquired, "Three?"

The teacher now had a victorious smile. Her approach had succeeded. She wanted to congratulate herself. But one last thing remained. Once again she asked him, "Now if I give you one apple and one apple and one more apple how many will you have?" Promptly Arnav answered, "Four!"

The teacher was aghast. "How Arnav, how?" she demanded in a little stern and irritated voice.

In a voice that was low and hesitating young Arnav replied, "Because I already have one apple in my bag."

"When someone gives you an answer that is different from what you expect don't think they are wrong. There maybe an angle that you have not understood at all. You will have to listen and understand, but never listen with a predetermined notion."
