Pre-fetching in Firefox

Monday, May 28, 2007

When firefox identifies a website, it automatically starts pre-loading all the links contained in it in the background. Since you seldom surf further in the sites, you prefer to remove this brake and do without the "service".

This function is supposed to speed up the downloading of a site when you click on a link. However, since you would hardly visit all the links in the site, this function is generally of no use. To top it, pre-fetching brings load on bandwidth, contributes to high data quantities and costs in the volume tariff causing the browser cache to fill quickly and demand high storage requirements in the system RAM. These disadvantages outdo the advantage. Hence deactivating the function is more advisable.

To deactivate this function, Open the configuration page by typing "About:config" in the address bar. Look for "Network:prefetch-next" entry in the list. Then right-click on it and select the context command ‘Switch’. Check whether the Boolean value is set to false. In future, the system will download the websites only when you will click on a link.

Why I suggest Firefox

Sunday, May 27, 2007

Here are few of the features of Mozilla Firefox that I like. If you don't yet have firefox installed, you can download it from the link provided above and check out the features for yourself.

Tabbed Browsing

Firefox opens new web pages in tabs by default. Each of those tabs has its own close button, but don’t worry - if you accidentally close a tab, just go to the History menu to bring it back from the list of “Recently Closed Tabs.” You’ll never be crunched for space anymore, either. When you have too many tabs open to comfortably fit in a single window, scroll arrows will appear on either side and a button on the right side will always show you an easy-to-read list of all your open tabs.

Spell Checking

Sometimes you’re in a rush, and can’t remember if it’s "i" before "e" or the other way around. Firefox 2 has built-in spell checking to keep you from making any mistakes in your blog posts and Web-based email, so you can worry about more important things.

Search Suggestions

Some of the search engines in Firefox 2 can read your mind, and actually suggest search terms for what you’re looking for. Just start typing into the Search bar, and a drop down list of suggestions will appear. (Works for Google, Yahoo! and Answers.com.). And these suggestions aren't vague guesses. They match almost always.

Session Restore

Losing your place while you’re doing things on the Web is a pain. But, with Session Restore, if Firefox has to restart or closes when it comes back you’ll pick up exactly where you left off. The windows and tabs you were using, the text you typed into forms, and the in-progress downloads you had running will all be restored. You can even set Firefox to always restore your previous session instead of loading a home page, so you’ll never lose your place again.

Live Bookmarks

Firefox Live Bookmarks let you view Web feeds such as news and blog headlines in the bookmarks toolbar or menu. With one glance, quickly review the latest headlines from your favorite sites and click to go directly to the articles that interest you. Also you can keep a watch on what your friends are scribbling in their blog by adding a live bookmark of their blogs. Isn't this feature amazing? So now onwards, you won't miss any "Breaking News" :-)

An Add-on for Everyone

You can choose from over 1,000 add-ons at the Firefox Add-ons Web site. A Firefox add-on can help you comparison shop, share bookmarks with your friends, see the weather in a corner of your browser, write to your weblog, get news, listen to music - all from inside the browser you already love. You can even change the appearance of your browser - from buttons to colors and fonts - so that it matches your own personal style.

Phishing Protection

Phishing Protection takes Firefox’s security to a new level, helping to safeguard your financial information and protect you from identity theft. When you encounter a Web site that is a suspected forgery (known as a “phishing” site) Firefox will warn you and offer to take you to a search page so you can find the real Web site you were looking for.

Attitude of life

Monday, May 21, 2007

Attitude of life should be like this.......... A jobless man applied for the position of 'office boy' at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.

HR MGR said.' Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.'

The man replied 'But I don't have a computer, neither an email.'

I'm sorry', said the HR manager, 'If you don't have an email, that means you do not exist. And who doesn't exist, cannot have the job.'

The man left with no hope at all. He didn't know what to do, with only $10 in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy a 10Kg tomato crate. He then sold the tomatoes in a door to door round. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the Operation three times, and returned home with $60. The man realized that he can survive by this Way, and started to go everyday earlier, and return late Thus, his money doubled or tripled every day. Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.

5 years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers in the US.

He started to plan his family's future, and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker, and chose a protection plan. When the conversation was concluded, the broker asked him his email. The man replied, 'I don't have an email'. The broker answered curiously, 'You don't have an email, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an email?!!'

The man thought for a while and replied, 'Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!'

Moral of the story:
M1 - Internet is not the solution to your life.
M2 - If you don't have internet, and work hard, you can be a millionaire.
M3 - If you are reading this message on blog, you are closer to being an office boy, than a millionaire..........

Love.. As they call it!!!

Thursday, May 17, 2007

So you are loosing yourself? You are thinking too much about that someone special? You trying to become what he/she likes you as? Trying to figure out what he/she likes or dislikes? And you are feeling that you are in love. Wrong.. You are not in love!

Yes. You are not in love. We have heard it all. "Love is Blind." "We should accept the person as he/she is". Then why do you keep conditions in it? Why do you expect the other person to change for you? And why do you change for him? Why do you eliminate the part of your personality that your lover doesn't like? And why do you expect the same from him? Few of us do follow the rules. But rest all don't.

And then, one day we realize we have changed a lot for the person. We start missing ourselves. You ask yourself "What am I doing here?" You have almost lost yourselves by now. Why? Cause you wanted someone to love you.

Everyone has a ready image of their "Dream Partner". Still we say love is unconditional. If I ask you "What kind of girl/boy you want to marry?" Everyone will have a short or long list of conditions. The length many vary from person to person. But every single person has the list with them. And still we say "Love is Blind". Is it really?

We say "Love just happens". No friends. It doesn't just happen. We have a design ready with us and when we find a girl / boy fitting in the design, we think that I'm in love with this person. But after you spend some time with the person, you realize this person shouldn't behave like this. This person should behave like that. And the list goes on always. Just as presented in Hum Tum song.

Uff Yeh Kaisi Shirt Pehnthe Ho
Yeh Kaise Baal Katathe Ho
Gaadi Tez Chalathe Ho
Tum Jaldi Mein Kyo Khaathe Ho
Gimme A Break

And its not just about girls or boys. All are the same. Everyone wants to change his/her partner. Why? Why can't we just love the person as he/she is. Why do we need to change the person? Why the heck? Can anyone tell me?

Blogcamp in Pune

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Read about this few days back in "Intelligent Pune". Its a "unconference" arranged in Pune. Tarun, the chief organizer of the event says

BlogCamp is a free unconference focusing exclusively on blogging, organized by bloggers for bloggers. It‘s built upon the principles of the famous BarCamp (ad-hoc unconference) focussed on sharing, learning and new ideas.

There is no audience to start with and you cant give a speech. There are only participants and they don't give speeches they share their knowledge. The environment is very informal and leads a lot of discussions.

Firstly, the BarCamp concept is totally new to me. And I liked that. I liked that very much. Secondly, a (un)conference exclusively for blogging. Great idea. Thanks Tarun for coming up with this.

Date: 16th June 2007
Venue: Symbiosis Center for Information Technology (SCIT), Hinjewadi IT Park, Pune
For updates, check out the official blog of the event here.

Do make a point to attend this event.

Prayer

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Prayer is not to lighter the burden,
it is to strengthen your back.

Prayer doesn't move the mountains,
But gives the power to climb.

Prayer doesn't bridge the sea,
But gives zest to swim across.

Have faith in Prayer and Efforts.
And all your works will be easier than ever.

Rose and The Thorns

Why do we gift rose to our dear ones? Why not the thorns?
Silly question I know. But can anyone explain me the reason? Is it because we want to spread the fragrance of rose or is it that we don't want to make our friends suffer with the thorns? If you ask me, Rose symbolizes the positive side (happiness) and the thorns symbolize the negative side (sorrows, problems, worries etc). So will you term someone as *friend* when you can't share the negative side with him/ her? Atleast I can't.
I will always share my negative side with those whom I consider as *friend*. After all, Girl Friends are made to create the troubles and friends are made to take you out of these troubles.
So next time, if I gift you thorns, don't think that I'm making you suffer. Think that I consider you as *friend* in true sense.

By the way, here is information about what different colours of roses symbolize.

-->Red: love
-->Pink: grace, gentle feelings of love
-->Dark Pink: gratitude
-->Light Pink: admiration, sympathy
-->White: innocence, purity, secrecy, friendship, reverence and humility.
-->Yellow: Yellow roses generally mean dying love or platonic love. In German-speaking countries, however, they can mean jealousy and infidelity.
-->Yellow with red tips: Friendship, falling in love
-->Orange: passion
-->Burgundy: beauty
-->Blue: mystery
-->Green: calm
-->Black: slavish devotion (as a true black rose is impossible to produce)
-->Purple: protection (paternal/maternal love)

Kraits

Monday, May 14, 2007

As per the feedback I received for my previous post about snakes, I am starting to put up information about few venomous snakes found in India. Here I'll start with Kraits.

Krait venoms are among the most toxic venoms in the world. The venom can in very short time, cause respiratory failure. Hence they have the reputation of sucking away a person's breath.

Common krait is found throughout the subcontinent. It is less common in parts of the northeast which is home of the beautiful Banded Krait, which has bright yellow and black bands on its body.

These snakes are active at night and relatively passive during day. They hunt after dark for their pray. Both snakes are snake-eaters. Banded krait kill and eat common kraits. This is perhaps one reason why the common kratis are rare in northeast. The native people often step on kraits while walking through their habitats. The krait has a tendency to seek shelter in sleeping bags, boots, and tents. They hide in rat and mouse holes during day. They prefer to live on dry lands.

Be thankful

Be thankful that you don't have
everything you desire.
If you did, what would there be
to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don't know something
for it gives you the opportunity to learn.
Be thankful for the difficult times;
during those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations,
because they give you
opportunities for improvement.
Be thankful for each new challenge,
because it will build your
strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes,
they will teach you valuable lessons.
Be thankful when you are tired and weary
because it means you have made a difference.

It's easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those
Who are also thankful for the setbacks.
Gratitude can turn a negative into positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,
and they become your blessings.

The last words

They say that life is short. Maybe, but often I have felt like this journey is taking forever. I have often wondered how it would be during those last few minutes of my existence. When I see my whole life flashing before my eyes, how would I feel? I don't want to look back and say, "Damn, I should have done that long ago" or even say "I wish I had more time." Its obvious that we can never be satisfied with what we do or achieve. Even if I make a list today and achieve all that by next year, I am sure that I will have more things added on to my list before its done. I believe that we all have that hidden desire that makes us want to do more and achieve more.

They say that you never know when is gonna be your last moment. It may be today, tomorrow or 100 years later. Who knows I'm taking a morning walk along the road, a drunk driver comes with his truck and hits me.. Or I'm enjoying a nice trek along beautiful monsoon grass of Sahyadris and a Cobra comes out of no where and bites me.. Or I'm traveling by a bus, the bus hits a bridge wall and collapses in the river. So you see, anything can happen..

Suppose tomorrow is my last day and I come to you with this news. What will be the thing you would like to tell me at this moment.. Ask your heart and then answer.. :-)

India 2020: Can we make it true?

Hello friends
India is celebrating the 150th year of first freedom struggle. Here is an extract from the speech by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam on the occasion. Read it, think about it and discuss it. Can we really create an India of his dreams some day? What things we, as an individual, have to do so as to make this dream come true?

PS: Those with time scarcity due to exams and work can just scroll down to the 10 rules of the "Dream India".

our movement to true freedom and independence is still incomplete; our story is still unfolding. The global environment however is still dangerous and India’s freedom won by suffering and sacrifice has to be alertly guarded, strengthened and expanded. Freedom and independence must be our continuing quest, and in such a manner as to accelerate our evolution as a free nation through a bold and swift development. Can we keep this perspective while we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the freedom movement? The time has now arrived for Parliament and Legislative Assemblies to emerge with a new vision and leadership to make our nation not only enlightened, united, harmonious, rich and prosperous, but above all, a safe nation, invulnerable forever to invasion and infiltration across its borders. I visualize the following distinctive profile for India by the year 2020, if the Parliament today resolves to implement the Mission India 2020 for a strong, prosperous and happy nation.

1. A Nation where the rural and urban divide has reduced to a thin line.

2. A Nation where there is an equitable distribution and adequate access to energy and quality water.

3. A Nation where agriculture, industry and service sector work together in symphony.

4. A Nation where education with value system is not denied to any meritorious candidates because of societal or economic discrimination.

5. A Nation which is the best destination for the most talented scholars, scientists, and investors.

6. A Nation where the best of health care is available to all.

7. A Nation where the governance is responsive, transparent and corruption free.

8. A Nation where poverty has been totally eradicated, illiteracy removed and crimes against women and children are absent and none in the society feels alienated.

9. A Nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, peaceful and happy and continues with a sustainable growth path.

10. A Nation that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership.

National leadership for realizing and sustaining the distinctive profile of a strong and prosperous India can emerge only when there is coherent, orderly and effective leadership from our Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.

A inspiratonal Speach by APJ Abdul Kalam

Thursday, May 10, 2007

The President of India DR. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam's Speech in Hyderabad. Its very long but worth spending 15 minutes for.

"I have three visions for India. In 3000 Years of our history, people from all over the world have come and invaded us, captured our lands, conquered our minds. "From Alexander onwards, the Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch, all of them came and looted us, tookover what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation. We havenot conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, and their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them. Why? Because we respect the freedom of others. That is why my first vision is that of FREEDOM. I believe that India got its first vision of this in 1857, when we started the war of independence. It is this freedom that we must protect and nurture and build on. If we are not free, no one will respect us.

My second vision for India is DEVELOPMENT. For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation. We are among top 5 nations of the world in terms of GDP. We have 10 percent growth rate in most areas. Our poverty levels are falling. Our achievements are being globally recognized today. Yet we lack the self-confidence to see ourselves as a developed nation, self- reliant and self-assured. Isn't this incorrect?

I have a third vision. India must stand up to the world. Because I believe that, unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. Only STRENGTH respects strength. We must be strong not only as a military power but also as an economic power. Both must go hand-in-hand. My good fortune was to have worked with three great minds. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai of the Dept of space,Professor Satish Dhawan, who succeeded him and Dr Brahm Prakash, father of nuclear material. I was lucky to have worked with all three of them closely and consider this the great opportunity of my life.

I see four milestones in my career: Twenty years I spent in ISRO. I was given the opportunity to be the project director for India's first satellite launch vehicle, SLV3.The one that launched Rohini. These years played a very important role in my life of Scientist. After my ISRO years, I joined DRDO and got a chance to be the part of India's guided missile program. It was my second bliss when Agni met its mission requirements in 1994.
The Dept of Atomic Energy and DRDO had this tremendous partnership in the recent nuclear tests, on May 11 and 13. This was the third bliss. The joy of participating with my team in these nuclear tests and proving to the world that India can make it, that we are no longer a developing nation but one of them. It made me feel very proud as an Indian. The fact that we have now developed for Agni a re-entry structure, for which we have developed this new material. A very light material called carbon-carbon. One day an orthopedic surgeon from Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences visited my laboratory. He lifted the material and found it so light that he took me to his hospital and showed me his patients. There were these little girls and boys with heavy metallic calipers weighing over three Kg. each, dragging their feet around. He said to me: Please remove the pain of my patients. In three weeks, we made these Floor reaction Orthosis 300-gram calipers and took them to the orthopedic center. The children didn't believe their eyes. From dragging around a three kg. load on their legs, they could now move around. Their parents had tears in their eyes. That was my fourth bliss!

Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the first in milk production. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice. Look at Dr. Sudarshan, he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.
I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign T. Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.
Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation. Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance.

Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours.
YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke, The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits.

YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - YOURS. Give him a face - YOURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground links as they are.
You pay $5 (approx. Rs. 60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU come back to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity... In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, 'see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.'YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, 'Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost.' YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why ?
don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston??? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India?

Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay, Mr. Tinaikar, had a point to make. 'Rich people's dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place,' he said. 'And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels?
In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job.
Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?'
He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.

We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home.

Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to change the system?
What does a system consist of ? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too.... I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians.....

'ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA
AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA
WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY'

Lets do what India needs from us.

Thank you,

Blogger Sucks

Friday, May 04, 2007

The blogger is turning into a sucker with the new features introduced. The blog entry title automatically converts into Hindi text. I don't know why is that. Its like blogger is showing off about the Hindi script feature.
The new XML template looks good. But you can't edit it using HTML. Somwtimes it shows an error message like

Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly. XML error message: The element type "hr" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "".

I don't know since when HTML introduced a closing tag for "hr". Javascript codes can not be added. It even doesn't allow Google Adsense. The customization feature is ok for newbees. But for experienced user who prefers to edit templaste through HTML, this is really one sucking feature. And its really irritating.
Hoping that blogger will take note of this..

Update 11/05/07: After going through the template editing tool, I am finding it better and easier than earlier.

Visit to Katraj Snake Park

Wednesday, May 02, 2007

Few days back, me and Dhiraj visited "Katraj Snake Park". Located in Katraj, this snake park is home to a number of snakes and other reptiles like crocodiles. One can see Snakes of different shapes and sizes in the park. Information about snakes with pictures is displayed in a library within the park. A zoo has also been recently added, making it an attractive tourist place, especially for children.

This snake park is well-known in the for its work towards animals besides its snakes and reptiles. Recently it added a zoo to it as well. Neelimkumar Khaire is the Director of the Snake Park and is himself a snake-lover. He has introduced innovative methods of communication in the park such as providing information about snakes through braille for the blind at the snake park. I also got to interact with Mr. Khaire who provided me information about the snakes and other animals in the rehabilitation center.

Here are snaps of few of the snakes we saw there.
